Without further ado, let’s take a look at our staff’s recommendations for 12 video games you just have to try!

  4. Tropico 6 (Kalypso Media)

  11. Call of Duty 2 (Activision)
  12. Bloodborne (Sony Computer Entertainment)

Without further ado, let’s get into it!

1. DayZ (Bohemia Interactive)

Believe it or not, this multiplayer, open-world, third-person-shooter survival game began as a mod for a tactical shooter game, ARMA 2! However, due to its overwhelmingly positive reception, the man behind the mod, Dean Hall, turned it into a stand-alone title in 2019.

The game places you in a fictional, post-apocalyptic Russian state of Chernarus and leaves you to fend for yourself in a giant open world brimming with flesh-hungry hordes of zombies and other players! Gamers have to collect supplies, weapons, and food to survive while avoiding or battling enemies at every corner. The game even features an in-game voice chat that allows players to communicate with strangers when they come across them, and even some gestures they can use to signal their intentions from afar (think about the “I come in peace” gesture).

Perhaps the most notable part of this game lies in the psychological aspect of interaction with other gamers; you never know whether that timid-looking guy from across the field will come in guns blazing or if that quiet member of your party will stab you in the back further down the line!

This mod is praised for its innovativeness and has, in a way, been a predecessor to battle royale shooter games — one of the largest gaming genres on the market today. If you’re a fan of nail-biting, shooter games that encourage player-to-player interaction, cooperation, and betrayal, DayZ is a must-try!

2. Pro Evolution Soccer (Konami)

Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) has been a long-standing franchise in the sports gaming industry, with the game’s first installment having been released in 2001! With such a vast pool of games to choose from, our colleagues couldn’t make up their minds which entry was their favorite! And how could they? If you’re a fan of soccer games and have played PES before, you’ve likely played them all!

This franchise is one of the best simulations of association football out there. The game offers a variety of game modes, including Master League, Kick-Off, and even multiplayer! You can choose to play as an entire football team or an individual player and gradually progress through your career. Also, PES offers players an incredible number of customization options and even allows for fan-made custom “patches” that can keep the experience fresh throughout the year.

Overall, if you’re a sports and video game enthusiast and haven’t tried PES out, you should rectify that as soon as possible!

3. World of Warcraft (Blizzard Entertainment)

It shouldn’t be surprising that WoW made it on our list! After all, this game made the MMORPG genre what it is today — a worldwide sensation. The very fact that, to this day, gaming companies worldwide are still racing to make “the next WoW” should speak volumes of this title’s success!

We know that you’ve likely heard many urban myths and horror stories about this game, so let us dispel the veil of misconceptions that surround it. No, it will not turn you into a mindless zombie and ruin your life, or worse.

Millions of players immerse themselves into the expansive and breathtaking world of this game daily, and for a good reason! WoW offers an infinite number of possibilities and caters to a wide variety of different tastes. Whatever you can imagine, you can do in World of Warcraft! Here are some of the things this immersive world offers:

  • Opportunities for endless exploration.
  • Immersive roleplaying.
  • Playing with your friends.
  • Competitive player vs. player action.
  • Overcoming hardcore challenges and killing difficult monsters as a part of organized teams.

With all of this variety that WoW offers, no wonder we have fans of this game in our team! We know that WoW might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but we still have to recommend it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience for everyone to try!

4. Tropico 6 (Kalypso Media)

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to live in the era of the great Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro and rule? Now you can experience that! Tropico is a game franchise where you take on the role of a dictator and rule over a tropical island nation. The latest installment in the franchise, Tropico 6, brought out only the best of this franchise!

In this game, players have all the freedom on how they want to reign. Do you want to be a harsh dictator and rule with an iron first? No problem. Do you want to be a just ruler and create a tropical paradise for your people? You can do that!

The players must handle the tasks such as construction and expansion of your nation, manage it, and even handle internal and external politics! Depending on your choices, you can earn or lose favor with some of the world’s leading nations, such as the U.S. and the USSR. These diplomatic elements, coupled with realistic internal management simulation, make Tropico one hell of a ride!

So if you’re a fan of Cuba or management and simulation games, you’re going to have a blast with Tropico 6!

5. Deus Ex (Eidos Interactive)

If you’ve been around for as long as we have, you must have heard about this immersive first-person shooter adventure game! Deus Ex is the first installment in a multiple-part franchise set in a dystopian, cyberpunk-themed world. The game has been way ahead of its time with its introduction of roleplaying elements to shooter games and choice-based outcomes; it even features multiple endings! With a wide variety of character customization options and diverse gameplay (stealth, combat, interactiveness), it’s unsurprising Deus Ex got multiple awards in its time.

If you are a fan of cyberpunk and have never played this gem, you should change that asap! Despite the game being released back in 2000, its story still holds up as one of the gaming world’s masterpieces! You can even find a fan-made remaster of the game online, so if older graphics bother you, you can give this version a shot!

6. Kingdom Rush (Armor Games)

Here we have a fun little mobile title for all the fans of tower defense games! If you thought we didn’t like mobile games, you were mistaken! If you’re a fan of the medieval times and are looking for something relaxing and fun to do in your pastime, why not download Kingdom Rush?

Do you daydream of the good old days when everybody and their grandmother played tower defense games? If yes, this title will satisfy all your nostalgia! Build towers to stop waves of advancing enemies from reaching your base and taking away your lives. The game also allows you to upgrade your towers with the points you earn from winning battles, so you’re guaranteed to have hours upon hours of fun!

Overall, if you’re looking to find a fun and exciting mobile to play in your spare time, you have to try Kingdom Rush!

7. Terraria (505 Games)

Do you like adventure sandbox games? If so, Terraria is a must-play!  This 2D sandbox game throws you into a procedurally-generated world to explore to your heart’s content. Although the game’s 16-bit visuals might look outdated, they are an integral part of the game’s charm.

In Terraria, you can explore the world, gather resources, build structures, and craft better gear for your character. The game’s scenery changes from biome to biome, which are characterized by different environments, enemies, and resources. Terraria even features various NPCs you can trade with and bosses you can fight. Ultimately, you choose how you want to play! Do you want to build yourself a house and roleplay? You can do that! Do you want to progress through the game and defeat all the bosses, unlocking the game’s hard mode? That’s also an option!

This quirky title is a real gem in the world of sandbox games, and it can fit a variety of gaming styles. So if Terraria sounds like something you’d enjoy, we wholeheartedly recommend you try it!

8. Darkest Dungeon (Red Hook Studios)

“Women and men; soldiers and outlaws; fools and corpses. All will find their way to us now that the road is clear.”

If you are a fan of turn-based RPGs, you must have heard about Darkest Dungeon! This indie game has earned itself a lot infamy across the internet for its difficulty. But that is precisely what made this game blow up! That and its memorable gothic and Lovecraftian esthetics, art style, and the chilling voice of the game’s narrator!

In this game, you inherit a decrepit estate from a distant relative only to find out that your ancestors had dug too deep into the catacombs beneath the family manor and unleashed unspeakable horrors upon this world. From there, you set off on a quest to restore your family name by vanquishing the eldritch horrors that await in the darkest dungeon.

The gameplay consists of two primary elements:

  • Town and party management.
  • Expeditions into monster-infested regions.

You recruit mercenaries from 15 (17 if you include the DLCs) different classes and make custom parties that you send on expeditions in various regions of the game. Throughout your adventure, you have to collect items and gold to upgrade your town, manage your soldiers’ stress and supplies, level up your party, battle incredibly powerful bosses, and more. Oh… and did we mention that when one of your party members dies, they are permanently gone? That’s right…

So if you enjoy an intense, nail-biting RPG experience, Darkest Dungeon is a game you must try. And remember…

“Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.”

9. FIFA (EA Sports)

Here’s another long-lasting sports franchise on the market — the FIFA series! Like its biggest competitor, PES, this series has existed for over two decades now, and it even holds several Guinness World Records

FIFA holds exclusive rights to many of the world’s biggest football leagues like Bundesliga, English Premier League, Chinese Super League, and many more. That is why the players can play using authentic team compositions of a variety of world-famous football clubs. They can even start their unique football journeys through the game’s Career Mode!

It’s hard to believe there’s a single football fan out there who hasn’t tried this game, but if there is, here’s a quick reminder to change that!

10. Europa Universalis IV (Paradox Interactive)

This game is a dream-come-true for any hardcore RTS fan! It combines the scale of the Total War Games with many other RTS elements like kingdom management, diplomacy, trade, administration, etc.

Europa Universalis IV encompasses the period between the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era. The game allows you to play as any of the nations that existed in those times. And once you’ve selected your favorite kingdom, you can proceed to lead their people toward prosperity! Throughout the game, you will spend most of the time managing your empire, vasals, city administration, trade, religion, or even organizing military conquests — this game has it all!

Europa Universalis 4 provides the most large-scale and authentic RTS experience, which will make all hardcore strategy gamers’ jaws drop. So if you fit the bill, this game is perfect for you!

11. Call of Duty 2 (Activision)

This old but gold FPS title is still a fan-favorite of many! Even if you aren’t an avid gamer, you must have heard of the impact the Call of Duty franchise had on the industry. Well, this second installation in the series is the title that started it all!

Call of Duty 2 is a WWII classic and the game that would shape the future of many first-person shooters. This title was the first to remove the health bar from FPS games and adopt the now widely accepted trend of “recovering by hiding from fire.” Aside from that, this Call of Duty game was the first to have a devoted and active online gaming community.

If you remember the good old times of playing this game with your friends at an internet café or have just missed this entry in the franchise, we encourage you to revisit it. We’re sure you’ll love it!

12. Bloodborne (Sony Computer Entertainment)

Are you a hardcore gamer? Do you like challenges? Do you just love gothic and steampunk esthetics? If the answers to these questions are yes, Bloodborne is the game for you!

This console-exclusive title is another gem from the infamous From Software, the studio behind the Souls franchise. This high-paced action-RPG game throws you in the Victorian-era inspired town of Yharnam. As soon as you wake up, you realize the city is overflowing with various beasts, werewolves, monsters, and similar Lovecraftian horrors. The game is relentless and unforgiving as you battle your way through the infested streets and challenging bosses on your quest to end the Hunter’s Nightmare. You use the blood of your fallen enemies to strengthen your character and purchase gear upgrades and unlock new weapons.

If you’re interested in enjoying an immersive and mind-blowing story, you can find it in Bloodborne! And by that, we mean literally find it. From Software is notorious for leaving only breadcrumbs for players to collect. If you want to experience the full story of this game, you will have to put all the pieces together yourself. But trust us… It is well worth it!

Bloodborne will make any gamer wish to throw their console out the window due to its unforgiving and challenging gameplay. However, that is half the game’s charm! So if you’re interested in a demanding but incredibly rewarding experience, this game is a must-play! Just don’t forget that, no matter how many times you die, the only way you’ll be able to move forward will be to “git gud!”

So don’t give up, and good luck!
